Artificial intelligence today answers everything. Simple questions, complex ones, vague ones—and often even those for which no correct answer really exists. Still, it responds quickly, smoothly, and with absolute confidence.
But what if the answer simply isn’t right?
Models like ChatGPT are designed to be helpful, fluent, and to avoid “disappointing” the user. Silence, uncertainty, or “I don’t know” are considered poor user experience. The result? A strong tendency to answer at all costs—even when:
Instead of admitting uncertainty, AI often assembles a response from fragmented sources, generalizes, oversimplifies, or fills in missing pieces—and then delivers the result confidently, logically, and without warning.
That’s a dangerously persuasive combination.
This phenomenon even has a technical name: AI hallucinations (also known as the hallucination problem). These are situations where a model generates answers that sound logical and confident but are factually incorrect, unverifiable, or entirely made up. Not because the AI is “trying to lie,” but because its goal is to continue answering—even when it lacks relevant information.
The combination of hallucinations and high confidence is one of the biggest risks of today’s generative AI. The answer often feels so convincing that users have no reason to question it—especially if it aligns with their expectations or existing beliefs.
Psychologically, this connects to another bias: authority bias. We tend to trust answers that sound expert and certain, particularly when they come from a “smart system.” And the smoother and more polished the response, the less likely we are to challenge it.
The core problem isn’t that AI lies intentionally. The problem is that it cannot reliably recognize the boundary where it should stop answering.
