The use of virtual reality (VR) technology in conjunction with 5G connectivity opens up new possibilities for senior engagement and enhancing their quality of life. Urban municipalities are implementing innovative projects that allow seniors to experience cultural, social, and sporting events through VR technology, all from the comfort of their homes, community and social centers, or even in outdoor spaces like gardens, parks, or public events.
Project objectives
The primary objective of these projects is to significantly improve access to social activities for seniors with limited mobility and to create an environment where they can experience rich digital experiences, engage in memory exercises, or participate in reminiscence therapy, which is a fundamental therapy for dementia patients. Virtual reality technology helps maintain cognitive functions, supports emotional well-being, and contributes to the prevention of social isolation.
Key objectives of the project
- Purchase and Implementation of VR Technologies: Acquisition of VR headsets, 360° cameras, and other equipment for creating realistic and interactive experiences, modernization of data infrastructure, and purchase of supportive equipment for activation and social workers.
- 5G Connectivity: Provision of high-speed data transmission services to enable high-quality live streaming of events in up to 8K resolution from virtually anywhere to anywhere.
- Creation of Virtual Content: Live broadcasts of cultural events, development of customized VR programs for specific user groups, and purchase of applications for senior engagement in line with methodological recommendations for the use of virtual reality (not only) in senior homes.
- Staff Training: Training of caregiving and technical staff to work with VR and support seniors in using these technologies, ensuring safety and accessibility of solutions, including a user experience tailored to the specific needs of seniors across their mental and physical capacities.
Expected benefitns
Digital technologies can be leveraged by urban municipalities to enhance the quality of social services provided. The main benefits include:
- More efficient delivery of activation services using innovative technologies.
- Reduction of social isolation among seniors and their integration into community life.
- Improvement of cognitive abilities and mental well-being through immersive experiences.
- Low-threshold access to current cultural and social events without the need for physical attendance.
- Inspiration for other cities and organizations in the field of social services and smart solutions.
5G and virtual reality technologies thus offer an innovative and effective way to expand access to cultural, educational, and social services for seniors, becoming an integral part of the modern Smart City concept in social care.
