Business has fundamentally changed in recent years. It is no longer enough to report only financial results – the emphasis is increasingly on how a company affects the environment, society, and its own governance. In this context, ESG reporting is coming to the forefront, becoming not only a tool for meeting legislative obligations but above all a path to sustainable and strategic development.
The European Union and investors expect ever greater transparency from companies. Climate change, public pressure, and regulatory updates – all of this is pushing corporate responsibility beyond the boundaries of traditional business. ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) represents a framework that enables companies to systematically manage their impact on the surroundings and strengthen credibility with employees, customers, partners, and banks.
Why is ESG worth it already today?
Timely implementation of ESG brings practical benefits:
- Improving reputation and trust among all stakeholders
- Easier access to investments and financing
- More effective risk management related to climate and social changes
- Increased competitiveness on the European market
- Preparedness for new regulations that are becoming standard
Although the Omnibus I package brings postponements and simplification of obligations, it is still worthwhile for companies to start ESG reporting as soon as possible. The reasons are clear: early preparation means less stress at the time of full enforcement, the ability to better set up internal processes, verify data collection, and above all gain a competitive advantage. ESG is also increasingly used as one of the criteria in tenders or investor decision-making.
EU Omnibus I package
In February 2025, the European Commission presented the Omnibus I package, aimed at simplifying ESG reporting and reducing administrative burden for companies. Key changes include:
- Reporting now applies only to large companies (1000+ employees and turnover above EUR 50 million)
- Reduction of data points by up to 70 %, greater emphasis on proportionality
- Postponement of some obligations, e.g. under the CSDDD directive until 2028
- Simplified templates and greater emphasis on truly material information
For companies, this means clearer requirements and room for effective preparation – but at the same time an opportunity to be one step ahead.
And what about municipalities and the public sector?
While the obligation of ESG reporting currently applies primarily to companies, cities and municipalities may report voluntarily. For local governments, this is a great opportunity to:
- Gain an overview of the environmental and social impacts of their activities
- Improve the management of public services
- Prepare for possible future regulations
- Strengthen public trust and openness toward residents
Voluntary reporting can also be an advantage in applying for European funding or in international cooperation.
